Basketball Tactics

Principle of attack in basketball

Retaining Possession

Retaining possession in basketball can be done in several ways. Firstly do you can do short and quick passes to each other and try to not dribble as much. Also try to keep the ball way from your opponent. Frequently move around on the court to try and create space fro yourself and your teammates to run into. Don’t force or rush your passes. interchange your positions on the court.

Progression towards the goal

To make the ball forward up the court you should move the ball quickly. Have players moving around to try and create space for you run into. You could also do 1-2 passes to try and create gaps in between the defence. Another way is that you can move up the field by blocking off players using a screen or you could isolate defenders in a 1v1 to pass them.

Finishing

In basketball there are several approaches you can take to score that every player can do on the court for example you do lay ups towards the basket or you can do jump shots any where although its more preferable to take one in the mid range zone or near the 3 point line. Lastly you can do post moves try and score or you could dunk the ball into the net. Also tactics like screening allow time fro your teammate to have space to get a shot off or by having runners they could create space for you to drive into so that then you could shoot. Lastly your teammates can even lay you off by giving you alley oop (lob pass) so that then you could even lay the ball or dunk the ball into the basket.

Regaining Possession

To regain possession in basketball you could do different marking tactics such as man to man marking where each player marks a certain player and follows their movement and sticks close to their opponent so that if they receive the ball they won’t be given time on the ball. Another tactic is zonal marking where you work mark space that a player might run into so that if the ball tries to get played into the space you are there to intercept the pass. Two man pressing is another effective tactic as it includes two players pressing one player on the ball which give him left time and space which makes it harder for him to keep possession of the ball.

Preventing Progression

One way to prevent progression in basketball is that you can do zonal marking to cut down the passing lanes in between your defence. Also you should have a compact defence which means that your defence is more tight allowing for less gaps in between your defence making it harder for your opposition to play in between those spaces.

Defending the basket

Tactics used in defending the goal is that you shouldn’t dive into challenges. communicate with your fellow defenders and try to force your opponent to make a mistake. Stay goal side of your attackers and always look over your shoulder. Wait until a player makes a mistakes and watch the ball, don’t focus on the opponent’s hands. Also when defending cut out passing lanes and follow your opponent and lastly stay on your toes. Also if your opponent shoots try to block the shot or get the rebound if they miss.
